A ‘Hindu’ U.S.?!

Aum

I happened to come across this article in the Newsweek while browsing some old issues in the library. Googled for it and came across the online version:

U.S. Views on God and Life Are Turning Hindu

Lisa Miller, the author of the article, remarks,

…conceptually, at least, we are slowly becoming more like Hindus and less like traditional Christians in the ways we think about God, our selves, each other, and eternity.

She goes on to quote from the Rig Veda,

Truth is One, but the sages speak of it by many names.

Hindus, traditionally, grow up to learn that all religions are equal, since all of them are ways to attain God. This is very different from the core beliefs of the main Abrahamic religions, including Christianity, which preach that their way is the only true way and the others are false. But most Americans do not subscribe to that view any more.

Miller offers as proof the 2008 Pew Forum survey, which found that 65 percent of Americans believe that “many religions can lead to eternal life”.

She goes on to talk about the belief in reincarnation, which is so central to Oriental religions, and which seems to be slowly gaining ground as well in the US.

An interesting read.
